I've just got a KX250 for off road use - haven't had a bike for a few years but never lost the urge. Need to fix a few bits and would be glad of any help/advice I can get.

been advised by a biker friend that these bikes have a coiled lead on each spark plug and if 1 has gone this could cause issues

so taken them off tonight and cleaned them up and gonna run a ohm reader across all of them tomorrow at work

will let ya know if this solves the problem for future peeps with same issue

It's leaking oil, trying to find out on how to strip, have got a old pair on at the moment, which are not leaking but very soft, How do you re-gas them? think this might be a cheaper fix, any idea how this is done? :uqk

This is a prety subjective thing...some will say EBC other will say SBS and on and on we go...how ever I will say....do not use GoldFran...these are full on "oops"...no feel, plenty of fade and poor stopping power to boot.

Whats leaking? the cylinder on the rear of the shock is gas filled and can be refilled with no problem...did this on my 1100 zephyr...if the main shock is leaking fluid they need a full strip down and replacement seals fitting...not sure on cost but it might be worth getting new instead...plenty of choice from different manufaturers to go at as well as a wide variety of prices

I'd go back to the carbs...sound like the floats need adjusting and possibly the needle jets need replacing.
greyninja Yesterday, 8:31 PM Reply to Front/rear end conversion in Tech Talk:
WOW...brave man...I am guessing that you have a workshop full of engineering tools and equipment?
First of all the front end....chances are you will also need to replace both the top and bottom yokes....head race bearing sizes may be an issue here so you might have to look at milling the head stock....also the front brake mounts will be different so you will need the corresponding brake calipers etc.
Single sided swing arm conversion should be ok with regards rigidity and handling but I hope you are good at measuring as you will need to make up your own spacers to get the new swing arm placed correctly in the frame....swing arm shaft size may be different as could the bearing sizes again....also you will have to look at changing the rear brake set up for one that fits the single sided swing arm as well as new spacers to get the wheel alignement correct.
All these jobs are not to hard if you know what you are doing but I will be honest and say that I would not attempt anything like this myself.
Good luck and let us know how you get on

Hi, first off I would take a closer look at the battery...if its a bit low on electrolite fluid it will not hold a charge properly, second look to the voltage regulator...if this is a bit dicky then it will have allowed the battery to be over charged and this leads to excess heat in the battery, high levels of fluid evaporation and eventually a knackered battery....I had a blackbird with a faulty reg/rec and it cooked the battery.
Go through the whole bike and disconnect every single earth you can find, clean the connections and the point on the frame where the connection fits with a light abrasive cloth till the metal shines and then reconnect them all.
Try the side stand switch and if fitted, the switch fitted to the clutch....neither of these switches will allow the bike to start if they are faulty....could just be full of water or lightly corroded...some electrical connection cleaner will expunge the water and operating the switch several times will clean the terminals within the switch.
The ignition cut out switch on the right hand handle bar ....go through the same process.
Get to the starter motor and check the connections there...again they could easily be corroded enough to give you either a false earth or just a poor connection so give these a good clean with a light abrasive cloth...so the metal is nice and shiney...and reconnect.
When you have been through these most common faults....get back to us and let us know if this has cured the problem.

By the way, does anyone know what the voltage should be at to start a GPX750R ? coz my battery after charging is now down from 12.02 volts to 11.82 volts after 20 minutes off charge !! will this be enough ????

Hi all again ! it turns out it wasnt the relay/solenoid after all !!!!
I have now got the battery on charge after changing the relay didnt do a damn thing lol. I have heard that the battery must be pulling 12.8 volts to start the bike, so i will see in the morning if it starts. The battery does charge at 14 volts but doesnt seem to hold it.
I may need a new battery, i will let you know :228
