OK, here’s the sit. I pulled the top end of the motor apart and found that the cams, cam bearing caps, and a few of the rocker arms are wiped out (looks like the motor was reassembled and started up dry). According to the manual, I can’t simply replace the bearing caps and cams due to the fact that the caps are machined with the lowers which are part of the head casting. Is it just me or is this just a bad idea of not having replaceable cam bearings? Anyway...I spoke to a local bike salvage parts guy and he suggested that I try to find a C-motor head, as the A & B motors had soft valve/valve seat issues. This guy had an A, but no B or C heads, so I’m thinking he was being more than honest. Anybody know anything about these issues? Another question: How does the A, B, C, etc. break down over model year? I thought that A was `85/`86, B - `86/`87, C - `88…or something like that. I ask this because A parts seem to be scarce and some sellers don’t know what “letter” they have, it would be nice for me to know what I can and cannot use. Last question (until the next one): Given that this is an A-motor, what heads, in terms of either letter and/or model year, can I use without modifications? Thanx! I would greatly appreciate any and all input. FYI: This is my first motorcycle engine rebuild, so go easy on the with the motorcycle jargon

Hi 1stkow, I've done a rebuild or two in my time. I've got a RX1000 (zx10a), I can't help you on bike as I havn't got the manual for it, but I can tell you the things that got changed on the zx10's if it helps. fiirstly, they made the cam chain tunnel wider. Then the made the water pipes (which go into the head) bigger, they then changed the carbs by 45degrees (now they are using injectors), they made the crank bigger, and added external oilways, all to keep the engine from overheating. I know that you can't use most heads from newer models on my machine, and I can't even can't get a new engine to fit in my frame. Judging by what you said, I'd guess that one of the oilways is blocked so when you do your rebuild check all of them. Good luck on finding a new head to fit Have fun Si |
