Hi guys & gals, Am in the process of doing my bike lessons and things are going well. Its now time though to start thinking about what bike i should get for my 1st ever bike. I always as a kid dreamt of having a ZXR 750, one of the ones with the circular twin headlights at the front. So now i am hopefully going to pass my Direct Access soon, and would really like a ZXR 750 as my 1st bike as i thought it is something i always wanted and it would be a reasonably cheap bike to get started with as i would be looking at a 1993 model probably. What would your opinion be on this bike as a 1st bike? Is there a particular ZXR 750 that i should look for as i know there are quite a few different version L1's H1's etc? What is the difference between these? Or do you think i should look at a ZXR 400 instead just to get started? or even something completely different? Please help me.

Hi Jono. The differences between the bikes are there.....but to a new rider, you'll not really spot them. Look at the site WEBZXR for all the stats. Andy has put together a really good site. I would probably go for the Iconic ZX7r P. The best shape, nice bullet proof engine - reliable running gear, parts are readily available, cheap now, and capable of 160mphish. They are ALL uncomfortable......it'll take time to get used to them all, but the grin and heartrate will confirm you have made the right choice. The engines sound intoxicating with a decent pipe on them, and the breading is direcly from the racetrack. An Iconic racer, which can hold it's own with modern 600's (little boys toys) for little money - ZX7r..... Me? I love the H1....the very first bike. You'll pick one up from eBay for almost feck all! But they are becoming rare, and parts are starting to become hard to find. Let us know what way you go......

Hi mate. The ZX750 is a fine bike, but to be honest is showing its age now. A guy wanted to race me the other week on his against my 636, and I left him way behind. It cornered okay, but the acceleration is not up to the 636. You won;t be dissapointed with one, but modern 600's are quicker |

personally if your a novice rider i would start on the 400, quick enough for the straight bits (legally) and light enough for the twisty bits. The zxr 750's seem to fetch a few pennies more (from what i've see on fleabay) than the 400, and i expect insurance would be a bit cheaper aswell. Easiest way is to go and do a few test rides and see what you feel comfortable with. let us know how the DA goes

I was looking at getting a zxr750 but plumped for a zx6r g1 and its great, get the revs up and it goes well and also handles well, not bad as a twos up as well if you want..... I dont think you would go far wrong with a zx6r but a 98 on....

Start on something less expensive and small and learn as you go, and if your girlfriend or friends knock it over,,you won't kill them.besides as you get better on a bike,,the more power you will want and in time you can step up to the big boys like the ZX14, by then you will appreciate fine art and performance and you won't have to worry about getting there. the question will be,,, how did you get there so fast? Shockwave.

I've got a zx6r if you're interested, it's not really standard. It's an F model on a N reg. If you want to see pictures I can email you some. Full race fairing, full Micron race system, single back end. Isurance shouldn't be to high because of the age, but doesn't look that old. |

my first real bike after i passed my direct access was a zxr400 l3 and trust me theres not a huge amount between this and the 750. they might pull away on the straights but the little 400 will catch straight back up again on the twisties. the 400 is a reasonable group 13 insurance and is good for 140mph. plus theres the other benefits of not having loads of power is things like tyres, chains and sprockets take less of a beating. fuel consumption on the 400 can average high 30's if u behave. having less power but still being capable of high speeds also allows u to master really riding the bike hard and get your technique sorted before unleashing monstrous power without the finnesse to control it. i've moved up now to a '04 636 and boy was i glad i learnt how to ride properly before jumping on this. nomatter what u get im sure that you'll have a blast as both bikes are loads of fun.

My first bike was a GSXR 750. I now own a ZX900 and I'll be a Kawi man till I die. But getting back to the point, I think it depends a lot on your build as well.. Im 6'3" and anything less than a 750 would have been way too uncomfortable. The 750 was even too small, but just remember, the bike wont go any faster than you twist that throttle. I out grew my first bike in a matter of months. But I am glad that I started with something smaller, cause Im on this 900, and its a beast. I topped out at 180 last night, and now its time for bigger. Just take it in stride and keep the rubber side down..

It's a tuff choice when you go for a first bike, I have a zx9r C1 that is the dogs. my first bike though was a 98 zx6r G1, it was a great first bike , not too heavy & stacks of go when you get it up in the revs. Like one of the others said it all depends on how big you are as to how well you would be suited to what bike. It's a bummer when you get back from a blast and you can hardly move because the bike is to cramped for you. The 400 sounds like a great first bike, more than enough speed to keep up with most things, and to be honest the ones you can't keep up with will be because they are going too quick, above the limit. Whatever you chose being a kwak owner is the gonads. Happy riding.

I have to agree. I started on a moped, then my first real bike was a It was a Z 250 LTD. - an awesome bike, but the engine went so i had to let it go. But after that I bought a 400 (its a honda) But it has taught me the basics, on how to ride corners, countersteering, knee down, fast roads, and I can still keep up with the guys on hayabusa's through the twisties, no joke! Because its way lighter, i'm lighter than the fat gits too :P. I'd go for the 400 its a very good choice, then move up to something bigger. I've ridden faster almost litre bikes, like a 900 fireblade and a ZX9R And i can say that riding those bikes was much easier after riding a light nible powerful 400cc bike. But its your decision maybe go for an older 600. |
