Hi in 1988 I had a GPX600 but then had kids etc so it had to go which was a shame cos I had a good bit of fun on it, anyway 10 years later I bought a 1200 bandit .... great bike, now I own a ZZR1200, even better but what got me was that it has some of the characteristics that the GPX had, the sound and the grunt , the way its bolted together etc which got me thinking about buying a cheap project to restore. I actually always prefered the look of the GPZ600 to the GPX600 (the vinyl sidepanels spoilt the look of the GPX) and anyway the gpz was the very first 600 on the market. So I bought a non runner gpz 600 A1 in red and black and set to getting it running again, no wonder it would not run the right hand coil had been connected up with the wrong polarity, the starter motor lead had pulled most of the strands off one end leaving no power to the starter, and the tank had about a litre of water in it and is consequently wrecked because of the rust inside. But with these probs sorted and a few other little niggling jobs, it started up allbeit very rough at first but setting the carbs soon had it purring on tickover... result a runnig machine (and a replacement tank) for £420, its rusty almost everywhere there is steel and the hagon shock is leaking oil , the fairing is damaged badly where I ripped off one of the indicators (whoops). All of this does not bother me I like a challenge and vow to ride it next summer in mint condition.... anyone else got one of these future classics? |
