Hey guy's,
My ninja 600 A1p, is playing up, it has been stored for about a year.
I have started it a few times, but its been sat there.
And its always been a pig to start up.

Anyway, I want to use it now I have the time, I've got a new battery for it, and put loads of fresh fuel in it.

To begin with It would turn over and start then die instantly,
so tryed it with choke still no luck,
then I tryed giving it throttle and it runs for a few seconds and dies,
then really giving it some at 6,000 through to 14,000RPM it runs badly (cold i take it) but it wont idle. just trys to die.
You can turn the throttle and it will just jump about the revv range really poor throttle response, and crappy running.

After a few trys I have ajusted the tickover. now with no throttle or choke It starts! and then dies after about 20 seconds. But it idles nicely at about 1250 revvs.

One thing i thought it might be is the tip over / bank angle sensor cutting the engine after a few seconds. Because its been on the sidestand for a long time, but its been on very unlevel ground and is tipped over further.
By the way I have tryed putting the bike upright, it makes no difference.
But it may need to be reset, thats if it has one at all?

Or am I going to strip the carbs down?

any help would be great plz.

Hi Gothy.
sounds like you have a spark, so that's good.
Sounds like you have compression, good.
so must be a fuel problem.
As the bike fires up, it sounds like you have fuel getting into the carb float bowl, so the bike fires up, but dies due to lack of fuel shortly after.
Things I'd check 1st would be at the fuel tap (pet cock), I'd make sure that the fuel is getting through.
Next I'd check the Vacuum pipe, making sure it not leaking air into the system, if that happens the diaphragm won't work and the tap will stay shut (if you put it on prime and the bike fires runs ok that's a sure sign that it's the vacuum pipe incorrectly fitted, or missing).
Next I'd check the diaphragm in the tap its self, then I'd be thinking about checking the carbs.
Sorry I can't get the right micro fisches for machine - the oldest I could find was for the Ninja 6oorC
I hope you find the problem.

ISNT YOUR BIKE FUEL INJECTED?? IF SO YOU OBVIOUSLY CANT CLEAN CARBS ETC, ALL YOU CAN DO IS WHEN IT CUTS OUT REMOVE PLUGS AND SEE IF THEY ARE WET OR DRY,, IF WET THEN YOU HAVE BAD SPARK, IF DRY THEN NO FUEL IS COMING THROUGH, MOST LIKELY YOU HAVE FOULED THE PLUGS WITH STALE FUEL, REPLACE THEM AND ALL SHOULD BE GOOD. LET ME KNOW ,,

cheers guy's I will let you know.

yes funny you say that, I would have thought it had fuel injection too, but no it has carbs.
Its the model before they had carbs aparantly. Its an A1P 636

Thing is just when i want to get the bike running again, I can't bloody work on it!
I took it into college to fix and its in the workshop, but I can't work on it because they are closed for 2 weeks!

GREAT IDEA that was. :599

oh well I will keep you posted.
Thanks for the reply's so far.

Ah right, a 636, let us the year and I'll find the right info for you. It helps knowing the internals of each machine and if you let us know exactly which model and year. Without that, all I can do is make my best guess!

Hi, unleaded fuel if left in the carbs for any length of time turns into a gel like substance.
The carbs should always be drained if the bike goes into storage.
Fresh fuel wont flush this %$£! out and a proper strip and clean should sort the problem.

Soz, I can't find the micro fishces for the model, but have to agree with Limehead on this one.

just an update, finally i can get to work on her on monday!
right so first im going to get to the drain screws, and see if their is fuel flowing to each carb.
Then if their is fuel it could be a engine problem, or a problem getting fuel from carb to motor.
If their isn't fuel in the carbs, i can trace it back to see where the problem lyes.
starting with the fuel tap, continuing on to the pipes, and the needle valve, float heights.
etc.
It could be a long process, but i will let you guys know. :kawa

wow i have just spent all day at college, with my ninja.

Right to start things off, I had to remove tank, & airbox, then I could get to the fuel pump, once i could actually get the bloody thing out of the bracket!

So I tested the fuel pump, yep that was squirting nicely :693
So tested the fuel pump relay, fine.
Checked how much fuel each carb had, in each chamber after giving it a start ( yes it died). Had very varied levels of fuel in 2 of the carbs.

SO anyway.
After removing the carbs, (easy once you've done it once), and disconnected the throttle, choke, and throttle possition sensor, and heaters.
Cleaned out all the jets and passageways, checked the needle valves, and floats.

I just reconnected the throttle, and heaters, to the carbs, and leaving the rest till wednesday.
I think I should check the spark plugs too, Its got coil packs does anyone elses have these?
I thought they were an aftermarket part.

back to the plan
when i can, fit the carbs to the manifold ( tryed pushing it on, any easy idea's )
reconnect the fuel pump, airbox, and tank.
Start the beast up :zrx

as always i shall keep you posted, any hints would be great.

ok me again.

Ive reconnected the carbs, and the pump, choke, breathers, airbox, and tank.
I also removed (with great difficulty) the sparkplugs, and coil packs.
Each plug was fine, had good gaps, and wasnt fouled.
Each was supplying a nice fat spark too.

It Still wont run, well it does for 3 seconds and then dies.
Ive got a youtube video waiting to post up to show you what the engine is doing.

I really dont know what else to try!
its driving me crazy, any ideas please!youtube 636

hey,
well anyway, I have fixed the problem!

the carbs needed cleaning, balencing, and they kept poping off the engine!

but the real problem was the fuel pump, it worked first when i tested it.
But when on the bike it would switch off after starting the bike, so the fuel wouldnt fill the carbs. So on a gravity feed it worked fine.

yay, she is running sweet. :wxq
