I have 98' ZX7R, little over 19,000 mi, sometimes after a week or so I will try start it and nothing, then other times it will. This is what happens, first turn the key, press the button and will here relays in the junction box clicking but no start, then I take the seat off, hold the starter button, take my other hand and with my finger tap on the starter relay (magnetic switch) and its starts. I have a new battery, new junction box, new starter relay. I'm thinking now it might be the starter. After I ride it and its hot its cranks fine. Before I tear it down, I'd like to see if anyone else has had such problems. Many thanks...

Hi, i have not had this problem on a bike but have with a car in the past.
When you press the starter can you here it spin, as the bendix may be sticking which would only require removal of the starter and a liberal spray of WD40.
However, the fact that when you press the starter relay it fires up suggests that it may be just a loose connection.
Good luck.

Hey limehead, thanks for the reply. I might not have describe my problem correctly, when I turn the ignition switch on everything is normal, the warning lights and neutral lite comes on, after I hit the starter button the headlight comes on, but thats it, I hear the relays in the junction box making contact, but starter relay will not engage and therefore the starter doesn't engage, but when hold the starter button down and tap on the starter rely it then the starter engages and the engine starts. I have the service manual for the bike and tested the relay per instructions and the relay seems to work normal, I just replaced it last year thinking that was my problem. I'm wondering if the starter brushes could be causing this.
