Oh. Shite.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Nice place to crash though... ![]() Was riding from the South of England to see my mum and dad in Aberdeenshire... all going well, taking the scenic route past Loch Lomond on my way to ride through Glen Coe when it all went a bit pear shaped. Went for an overtake and think my rear wheel must've been on that nicely painted white line 'cos the rear wheel kicked totally sideways, sending me into a major tankslapper which ended up with me sliding down the road :(. Would probably've been able to limp on if the rear hadn't punctured, but I think both wheels made contact with the guard rail thing because both rims are dented. Crash bung did it's job to some extent but it looks like it may have bent back and crimped the frame, also my rear hugger is cracked which makes me think the swingarm might be twisted too. Not looking good. I'm ok, bit bashed and bruised but my gear did its job- jacket and trousers trashed (textile), boots have lost some stitching but needed replaced anyway and only a little scratch on my helmet. Just annoyed at myself for doing something so bloody stupid. If the bike's a writeoff (if the frame and swingarm are fooked) I'm really not sure what I'll do... but anyway, here's to fully comp insurance. I hope. |

Glad you're still in one bit. It could also have been the overbanding on the repair that caused the tank-slapper. Actually, that stretch of road all the way from Tarbet to Crianlarich is bad for accidents. You're lucky the barrier was there or you'd be at the bottom of Loch Lomond. Keep us posted on how you get on with the bike. |

Unless you have fully-comp insurance - I suggest you don't throw-away your dented wheels just yet to buy new ones. Certain types of wheel damage can be repaired which could save you money ! Kawasakifreak. |

Yea best get the whole bike assesed, there could be underlying damage that is not noticable, like fork damge, frame warping, and fractures in certian places that the mechainics will know to look at. I have seen bikes that look fine, but when inspecting them i have found frame fractures round the stress areas, and such. Thank goodness you were OK that's the main thing Ken

Hey guys, yeah I'm fully comp and the bike's on its way to place called 4th dimension who apparently have things like laser measurement devices and x-ray facilities to completely assess the bike. I have a feeling my R&G crash bung has bent back and dented the frame which will probably mean write-off. Plus the forks and swingarm being twisted (I think), it's almost a certainty. Not sure what I'll get if it is a goner... wish Kawasaki made a supermoto based on the ER6 engine and running gear- fancy a Yamaha XT660X but think it will feel underpowered after the ER... also quite tempted by another ER6n, either in Orange or the sexy all black one they do. Would try and buy some bits back off the crashed bike if I did that- things like the Scorpion can, lights, brackets, one bar end mirror etc which would save me some money. |

Quick update for anyone who's interested... Just had a chat with the guy who's assessing the bike and he's going to try and keep it from being a total loss. Apparently the frame is slightly dented but he doesn't think it's bad enough to scrap it. He needs to talk to a specialist on Monday. The swingarm wasn't twisted- the hugger was broken by the bent passenger foot rest plate thing so that's another plus. The main expense he's talking about is a set of rims (~£400 each!) and new tyres. Anyway, fingers crossed for Monday... If they do repair it my plan is to ask them to order a set of 07/08 black wheels rather than the standard silver ones... been thinking of getting mine powder coated for ages

Hey guys, latest is that the bike is not a write off. They basically left it up to me- either write it off and get a settlement from the insurers or accept the bike back 99% repaired. The frame is slightly dented but their frame specialist is happy it's not structural and hasn't affected strength at all. So basically provided I was willing to accept the bike with that mark (which will pretty much be covered by the crash bung anyway) then they can get everything else sorted. They've agreed to order me some black wheels from an 07/08 bike too which is good. Only bad bits are 1) the bike won't be ready until the 15th October... and 2) there is a slight rub mark on the tank from where the webbing straps were used to hold the bike onto the recovery truck. I'm hoping that will polish out with a bit of TLC though. So yeah, will hopefully have the bike back by next month but still need to sort out new jacket, trousers and boots. |

If you're not needing to sort out a new leg/arm then I'd count this as a win. Well done. |

Hehe, good call! Was just thinking last night that I must've been quite lucky not to highside when the rear wheel bit again and if it had I could well have been thrown onto that guard rail... the consequences of which aren't worth thinking about! Yup, I was lucky to get off so lightly. Best not try do it again when I get the bike back... |

The accident was over a year ago now and have been up and running for ages now. The bike's gone under another facelift as well (pictures in the pics sub-forum) and is still running perfectly. There are still a couple of light marks showing that something's happened to the bike but they were actually made by the pick up driver rather than the accident itself!! |
