Okay ladies
this is why I like this forum, I don't feel silly asking.....
What's all this stuff about restricted if you've done direct access?
I thought DA was to get to right to the bigger bikes?
Or is it because you are over 21?

How can you do DA, be restricted to 125cc but still have a larger cc bike?

Hi Julie,

Direct Access is a way of doing intense training over a few days and then taking your test, as opposed to only doing CBT for a Learners Certificate and then riding a 125cc for up to 2 years with L plates before Having to take a test.

In my case, my instructor on DA did not move me to a 500cc bike during my training (there was a 'macho' problem, long story....) so I had to take my test on a 125cc. If you pass your test on a 125cc, then you are restricted to riding only that size of bike (or a larger bike restricted to 33bhp) for 2 years. In my case the bike that Dave bought me, a Virago 535cc, had been restricted already, so I had no pressure to take my test on a 500cc. I rode the 535 for 2 years and then had it de-restricted to bring it back to full power. I then went a bit mad and went straight to a ZZR600, but I did have 2 years riding experience to justify it! If you do your DA training on a 500cc and pass your test on it, then you can ride whatever size of bike you like..600cc....750cc....1000cc. By law, you cannot ride higher than a 125cc for the first 2 years if that's what you took your test on, if you have an accident or your bike is stolen, your insurance would be null and void.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Lyn, I got that. its the restricted bit on a bike over 125cc. I asked hubby too and he said he thinks its something you do to the bike to make it less powerful (?!*#?). Mess with some setting or another to reduce its power? Does it cost money??

Hi Julie,

Before I booked up my training I was going to take my test on a 125cc and looked into getting a bigger bike restricted.

I was quoted £200 and was told most of that is just for the certificate.

Apparently without the certificate it will void your insurance if involved in any accidents........the restrictor on its own only costs about £30.00.

Hope this helps.

Hi Julie,

Sorry I got the wrong end of the stick! Yep, the bike mechanics can do something to the bike to restrict the power, with the Virago it was something put inside the exhaust pipe to narrow it. Dave tells me they can also do something with the inlet valve or with the throttle. I don't know how much it costs (it was mainly labour charge to get it removed). I guess the best thing if you have to do it is to get some quotes from bike garages.

Hi... I passed my test on a 125cc, when I bought my ER6f I had to have the restriction kit fitted, it cost about £250 and comes with the offical certificate for insurance purposes.... it can be removed 2 years after taking your test. According to the mechanic the restrictor reduces the power meaning you wont reach top speed....which is something I had no intention doing anyway....... Dawn

What's considered top speed?????
I'm not sure if I should admit to what I have done in the past

Well I am beginning to wonder if I will have to go "restricted". I am riding on my US license, but must be tested and pass by June if I don't want to lose the privilege on riding on UK roads!

I have been working with an instructor, when my time permits. Great instructor. However i am trying to do the dam--d U turn on my 500! Extremely tough for me. I did it on his loaner 125cc - no trouble. but heck, this is driving me nuts and I will fail on the day at this rate! Test is in late march.

I got so tired today, trying time after time after time on various bikes that I dropped his (ouch)!
