Hey everyone. Hope winter is not too harsh on all of ya. Can't wait to go back riding!!! Anyway, I own a 1986 ZX-10R Ninja (GPZ 1000RX in Europe) and my valves are pretty finished. I was told that I would need a new head on the engine. On the other hand, a friend of mine crashed his 2001 ZX-9 without damaging its 12,000 kilometers engine and he's willing to sell it to me, along with his wheels, swingarm, etc. for a very good price. So, I would like to know if any of you guys out there have ever heard of such an engine swap. Is it possible, can it be fitted or should I look for another solution? I ask 'cause back here in Canada, finding a new engine or spare parts for an '86 Ninja is pretty hard or pricey, but I love this bike so much it would be a shame if I had to sell it. Any ideas? Thank's in advance, Kawi lovers! Matt |

Hi oldninj1R, If you have the time & you know someone handy with a lathe you can make an engine fit almost any bike within reason. But to fit a ZX9R E model motor into the steel box-section frame of your ZX10R/GPZ1000RX would take loads of work. Most of the difficulties would stem from the fact that the post-1998 ZX9R motor was a clean-sheet design so carried over no parts from previous models to my knowledge. I suggest an easier option would be to try to find a GPZ900R or later ZX10 motor which are the before & after versions of the GPZ1000RX engine. Good Luck. |

Hey Kawasakifreak! Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I've been working on my bike in a friend's garage for a couple of days and we kinda' came to the same conclusion. Fitting a ZX9 engine on my bike is just too much time and effort, with all the cutting, fitting and fine tuning that kind of project implies. Plus, I found a Kawi enthousiast who is willing to buy my baby at a reasonable price, so I guess I'm on the hunting mode for a new bike this spring. Thanks again for your advice and a lot of great rides to all for 2010! |
