Hi all. I don't want to take up a lot of your time with introductions and all, not just yet. I'm 57 years old and have been riding since I was 18 years old. First bike was a 1970 Kawasaki G3TR (?) Is that right? I've always like the sound of the 360 degree vertical twin. The BMW opposed twin is not the same to me. Anyway, I know of someone who is selling a W650 from another state. So this is "sight unseen" and 10 years old. Tires, fluids, seals and all that are concerns. The thing is, I don't NEED this bike. But for the asking prices of $3-4K seem way too high. I realize it has a cult following, but I'm not one of them. What do I need to know to make an bid on something like this? NADA says they're worth about $2k. It would cost me about $700 to have the bike delivered to me. This is kind of an impulse idea since I am on a fixed income and partially disabled, so I don't ride much. But when I do, it's about a 200 mile day. From what I've read, this is not a bike to ride at 80mph for long periods of time, etc. More of a "ride for a few hours" bike. Any suggestions or advice? Thanks. |

Columbo First of all,what is the vendor looking to sell it for? If it is around $3K it would have to be mint condition,from what I've gleaned on W650 websites. Here in the UK,the price can be between £1900 - £3k. The reason why they tend to hold their value is that they are no longer in production and the fact most owners tend to keep hold of them.I've had people come up to me offering a blank cheque to buy mine! Obviously,condition is gonna reflect in the price,but making a cheeky offer with a wad of notes can pay off. At the end of the day,if you think its too steep or you feel something's not right - walk away. As for the comfort on riding at 80,it depends on whether the bike has a screen fitted,if the seat has been replaced with a later one (the seat top is ribbed,rather than plain) which suits taller or heavier riders better.Some put on lower bars. Personally I've done a 200-plus mile run on mine(2002 model low bars,early seat,187 pounds),mostly around 70-80 mph and have started to get uncomfortable around 140-150 miles. It's a 2000 model, said to be in excellent condition with 3,000 miles on it. Asking $4,000 but may be flexible. I might just pass on this as I have a DL 1000 that's fun to ride, does everything I want, it's just too damn tall for me at stops!! I don't want to low ball the guy....he knows what it's worth...even in this economy. I would have to add a windscreen. I'm spoiled. But I've put screens on bikes and that made the noise and turbulence worse (and yes, the V-Strom is one of them!) I think it's the cult following that keeps the price up. Many bikes were only made for a few years and they aren't worth anything now. Thanks! |
