hi there last month i had my camshafts of to do my tappets. i rebuilt camshafts camchain and tensioner according to the haynes manual.when i started the bike i heard a top end noise(cam chain).when i took off the valve cover and turned the engine over by hand(big crank nut)there was slack in the chain between the 2 camshafts but the chain would tighten up when the engine was turned over again by hand. i took off the tensioner again and stripped it down again i cannot find anything wrong with this tensioner. my question is this do i get a repair kit from wemoto or get a manual adjuster from Krieger's Cam Chain Tensioners or is my camchain worn? phibbieman |

I never had that problem... but of course I put in manual tensioners on both bikes that had the OEM fail, one had two go bad in 14,000 miles. Haven't had either apart since... But then again, I am the Krieger who did the tensioners when no one had them listed for my bikes, then had people start ordering them from me after I made five extra. I never figured out why an Automatic tensioner should EVER need any work done in less than 100,000 miles. After having two go in the KLX I wouldn't buy the line "all Kawasaki engines are noisy." when I was told that about the Zephyr when asking about manual tensioners. For what it is worth, once the cam chains are seated the adjustments become very long and far between. I have about 10,000 miles on the first adjustment on the ZR550 Zephyr and have yet to need to adjust it. I also can not remember the last time I adjusted the KLX. It has over 30,000 on the manual tensioner with four adjustments, starting with the first three fairly close together due to new cam chains (two in the KLX). In other words, if you have yours hose up again, do the tensioner first, the chain should be fine. And how much faith can one have in a self adjusting tensioner that needs rebuilt or an automatic one that can fail? I couldn't. |

I recently bought a used ZX6 tensioner, same as one used in some models of the ZR, and I actually have visual proof of what I've been saying I saw on my old KLX tensioner that I threw away. The one tooth is physically worn down and the tensioner is skipping over a couple teeth. I am going to see if I can get a good close up picture of it to show people. |
