Gpz500s; Starting/Wiring problems

Hi folks,
My first post on this site but a regular reader. I am hoping someone can give me some new things to check out as this is my first project bike.

I bought a '95 GPZ500S very cheaply from a friend who didn't look after the bike at all. I managed to get her running but the starter was a car electric mirror switch !! It did start the bike but the solenoid was re-wired, I was told the solenoid was blown. I tried to re-wire the solenoid after purchasing a new one and when I tried to start the bike I blew a diode in the fuse box... I didn't re-wire correctly. He had a bunch of 30a fuses in there instead of all 10's. I bought a manual and used the wiring diagrams to wire up the solenoid correctly.

I then bought a second-hand fuse box and hooked that up with 10a fuses in there instead. This didn't work.
I then managed to get another loom and was going to re-wire the whole bike to ensure all wires were where they should be. When I looked at the new loom I realised I had wired everything back to the way it should be so I didn't use it, I just used it as a reference.
Right now the bike won't start using the starter button, the neutral light doesn't come on when in neutral....this is only since blowing the diode. I did try starting with the clutch pulled in just in case the issue was with the newtral switch.
I shorted out the solenoid to see if it tried to spin the starter and this does work so I can assume the starter is ok and I am also assuming the solenoid is working ok.
I took off the starter and used a multimeter to see if the starter button is working and it does seem to be.

So thats my problem ! I was wondering if anyone had any other ideas?

Thanks,
-B.
