79 ltd fouling #2

Hello,

I have a 79 ltd 1000 that fouls #2 plug. I think the coils and wires are original and still has points. Compression is high 140's accros the board. Compared fire on #2 to the others and seems to be the same. Cleaned the carbs while on the bike wth Techron. #1,3 and 4 plugs look perfect....#2 wet and black. #2 has the accelerator pump...can a bad diaphram in the pump cause a rich condition? Any and all comments welcome.

Your ignition components are 32 years old, if possible consider going with either a Dyna "S" ignition system or finding an electronic ignition from a wrecked 80's Kawasaki. Even when new, the ignition coils were marginal, put years,vibration and all the trapped heat from where they are mounted, and now the ignition coils have reached the end of their useful life.

I'd recommend the Green 3 ohm coils from Dyna with new high tension leads(sparkplug wires). You can go two ways;
The standard copper sparkplug wires/leads with new sparkplug resistive caps, or the supression leads/sparkplug wires without resistive caps. These coils will accept 7mm sparkplug wires/leads.

New ignition coils will throw a hot,fat, blue spark, greatly improving how the bike will run.The resistive caps reduce the RFI heard on radio's and T.V.'s(the snap and pop when sparkplugs fire).

Thanks Mike, and agree about the ignition components as I have a 75 Z1 and a 80 ltd 1000 with the parts you mention plus both hot wired per Wired Goerge. However, on the 79 I don't think the miss or fouling is a fire problem. I tried to switch #2 and 3 wires but #3 wouldn't reach. I have one good Accel coil...I'll hook it up and and do a test.

Also wanted to mention, it has a hesitation when I ask for more power like passing a car at hwy speed but does not miss under full wot.

How's the compression? About 125 PSI is as low I'd go before teardown/rebuild, and the pressure differences should be within 10%, or uneven engine operation will be felt.

Good fuel flow? No obstructions? If it were me, I'd be replacing the fuel lines from the petcock to the carbs as I believe the gas/alcohol mix will swell the lines, restricting fuel flow. Running a fuel filter? Air filter clean? Sparkplugs properly gapped and correct heat range?

I've had new NGK's fail right out of the box, so I changed to Denso W24-ESU's with no problem. Accel makes a comparable sparkplug # 116.

Compression is 140's on all four. New fuel lines and filters...have not taken the petcock apart yet..on my list. Air filter is good. Running b8es gapped at about .030". I hooked up the Accel coil using different wires and got the same miss on #2. Where do you get ND plugs? I tried Auto Zone, Napa, Oreilly and the local bike shop...couple of the parts stores had never even heard of them.
