Hi All,

The front wheel of my 1994 Kawasaki GT 550 is not moving freely. It feels like the brakes are not releasing properly, especially when rolling the bike backwards. Does anybody else have this problem?

Also, the two front disks seem to give very little braking. It’s only a single pot on either side. Has anybody looked into getting better brakes for this reasonably heavy bike?

Thanks,

I would put some time aside to go through your brake system.
Even though your brake fluid may seem OK to the eye - the system may be cudded up inside.
Take the calipers off the fork legs and remove the pads. Then pump the brake lever until you can remove the piston from the caliper.
Then you can clean out the cylinder and the edge of the piston.
I use an air canister from an electrical shop to blast down the tiny holes in the system.
Take off the splitter from under the headlight and clean it thoroughly.
Take the lid off the master cylinder and clean any debris - use air can to ensure no blockages.
Relace any seals - banjo bolts as required.
Get fresh DOT 4 brake fluid.
Assemble system and tighten bolts and start to re-fill the system.
I also use a speed clamp - a DIY tool that is like a caulking gun but has a flat plastic foot at each end - this can be used to squeeze the piston back into the caliper - which can help squeezing trapped air up to the master cylinder.
