Hi allofya.

I have a delicate issue. Can't get my z500 @550 to run right.
Bought her as a dead spares bike. Swapped + and - on the solenoid and fired her up.
She had been stood for 8 years, so yes. I changed oil'n filter before hitting the buttn.

new oil, new gas, some juice in the battery. She woke to life before the starterbutton was fully pressed.
BUT shes running like an old traktor on low rpm, runs fine from about 2k pulls like an elephant from 3.5kish.
rews to 9k easily. she have an odd missfire with a puff in the airfilter while on steady speed.
And she shoots like a gatling on 'engine breake'.

I have my haynes manual. but can not for my bare life adjust her as the manual say. 1 get one tooth of, no matter what i do.
So i carefully examined the engine #'s covered by the manual. newsflash: she wasn't there. And i can not find her anywhere on the net that isnt in japaneese.

Frame is a KZ 500 B engine is KZ 550 AG. Where AG is the problem. There are other engineseries with seriespesific settings,
Was wondering if maby she's one of those.

I found the chaintensioner spring shot. put in a new one. And all hell broke loose. First the 'nuts in a tincan' noice rose tenfold. then after examining and checking said manual. I moved inlet to get the mark alligned properly. after doing this i can not get the chan right. Its supposed to have pin 43 and 44 on each side of inletmark when uotlet and inlet is aligned properly over TDC.
This is just not possible. One of them HAVE to be off to get the bits together.

Most grateful for any help here.

Alligned the best i could. Turns over just fine. No clunks or clanks.

Running the engine on the starter. With sparkplugs in, but not plugged. Only the starter makes noise.
Not a clank, nor a clonk not even a little bink or bank.

BUT. Plug in the plugs. Sigh.
sounds kinda like a 5 sprocket bicycle when you turn the pedals backwards, only 10fold. If that sounded bad, just wait til it fires.
She always used to wake up at the first beat from the coils. Takes a bit now, and when she comes... the neighbors start phoning.
she sounds kinda like something between an old vw golf td and an even older merc 300 diesel. -in minus 40.

there is 4 possible settings, all being 1 of. iv tried all 8. its exactly the same in all of them. I can not find any doc nowhere that can give me a clue.

Maby i should just get me a GPz engine that IS listed, and use this one for parts. Sigh. :tthu

in the haynes manual i would opt for the top option on page 112 all 500 550 models except A1 A1L . the exhaust cam is the important one and must be level the inlet is set as you say between 33rd 34th even if it doesnt line up level with the cylender head. and i assume you reset the chain tension each time as per manual to take all up slack between cam sprockets ?
