Kawasaki zzr600; Problem with starting

I have a Kawasaki zzr600 d1 and just recently I have had a problem when I go to start it. Most of the time it works ok but occassionally all it does is make a whirring noise when I press the starter switch. Could you tell me whether it is a problem with the starter motor or something like the wiring. Thanks.

Am assuming your are not talking about a cliking sound, which would be the starting solenoid with a weak battery.

By your description it sounds like the starting clutch is slipping. When it does, it sounds like there are marbles inside the engine, or a bad bearing. Starting clutch is a way clutch between starter motor and engine. When it slips, the starting motor is spining, but engine does not crank. Is this is your case, post back.
