Found some conflicting information from oil manufacturers on appropriate motorcycle oil, Owners manual states use SE or SF Grade 10W40 - 20W50. Have always used conventional oil before, but hoping for something better. |

Unlike cars, in a motorcycle the oil also lubricates the transmission and cools the wet clutch. For these reasons motorcycle specific oils are rated heavy duty, same as diesel engine oils which have about same formulation. It has to do with molecules being more resilient to breaking. Synthetics are even stronger. It has to do with durability and preservation. You can use regular car oil, but anything heavy duty is better than normal for longer life, albeit more expensive. I've been running Lucas oil in my motorcycle and I have yet to run into overheating problems or anything. Bike pulls just as well as before and still shifts like a dream. Actually after I switched oil, which may have just been a needed oil change, the gears shift smother and I don't have to tap the selector twice to shift out of 2nd, or 3rd? I can't recall since I don't count my gears anymore. |
