Hi, I have a kawasaki eliminator 900cc us 1985 bike. Also the same as a GPZ900. I fitted a new head gasket and put the bike back together, but now it won't start. Im presuming I havent got the timing right, but I cant get a workshop manual for it anywhere. Can anyone please help me to sort the timing or know where I can get a manual. Thanks Rob. |

not a clue, but are you sure its a timing problem and not an electrical/carb problem ? i used to know someone that rebuilt a z550 from the ground up that refused to start for ages, he put it in a shop who fixed it in 2 minutes by swopping the coil leads round |

I will be trying that today, thanks. If anyone does know the timing settings I would like to rule that out too, as I'm not sure if the bottom fly wheel moved or if anyone knows of where I can get a manual or wo can email me the timing setting from the book.

Hi there, usually with kwaks, you bring no.1 cylinder to tdc on compression stroke and hold it there, a jack supporting a t-bar will usually hold it. there should be 'IN' and 'EX' on the cam sprockets, which normally line up with the flat face the rocker cover goes on, IN being the correct side up on the inlet cam and EX upright on the exhaust cam. make sure the camchain is tensioned correctly and turn the engine twice by hand so the crank returns to the same position and re-check the timing. are you getting backfiring or anything while trying to start with no choke or throttle? |

P.s. its the lines below the INand EX youre lining up, if theyre not there then its a different method of timing |

Also check that the cut out switches are working OK. There is one for the sidestand that plays up from time to time, but there is also one under the clutch lever. If the motor is spinning freely but not firing - check for sparks by removing spark plugs and checking against the head. Previous post about having the coil wires reversed is a common mistake. If all else fails - check in at ; www.zl-0a.com its an Eliminator based forum with tech manuals for download in the relevant section. You will need to register - but it is free and really friendly forum. HTH |

Just remembered that there is an engine kill cut out switch under the right hand switch gear on the handlebars. What can happen is the two wires that operate the engine kill can get snagged while working and pull slightly causing the engine not to start. |
