Hi, I am writing this for a friend called Tom. I am not mechanically spoken so please bare with me. He owns a zx9r however is still on a restricted license up until Sep 2014. So he decided he better put a restriction kit, so he put in the 4 metal circles with small holes which go under the carb to restrict the air-flow. After a few weeks his engine gave up and decided to stop working, we've taken the engine out and found the head gasket is wrecked. While he now has the engine out he is worried that taking over 100BHP from a bike cannot be great for the engine. I suggested some kind of throttle stop/throttle restriction but we are unable to find any matching a zx9r 99 C. We used zx6r restriction kit for the air restriction as we were unable to find any for the zx9r. Has anyone had problems with restriction kits on the zx9r? And also does anyone know if you can get a throttle stop LEGAL for a restricted license. My guess was just don't let the bike go over 100mph and it'll be below 33BHP for sure, however we were you'd only be able to move the throttle a tiny bit and would it be uncomfortable. Rather than creating a new post I'm also going to ask this quick question, I've uploaded a picture here (first time so I hope I done it right) When stripping the bike we found this small piece of metal. I've uploaded the pictures on the attachments part. and it came out of the right hand side pipe going to the radiator from the thermostat. Edited by Kimber015, Dec 8 2013, 11:29 AM.

hi kimber, unfortunately, big bikes do not like restriction, however there is no guarantee this caused the problem, either way I wouldn't reccomend restricting a zx9. anyway, your theory on keep it under 100 is slightly off, as the restriction changes the rate of acceleration, not so much top speed. my mate had an er-6f with a throttle stop, and it had about 2mm throttle movement, so not the best solution. the best solution is what is already fitted, and keep an eye on the temp gauge. |

erm, that's something that shouldn't be in a water pipe, dunno what it is, but could be part of the water pump, I would take the water pump off and inspect it, as well as checking the whole system for leaks and flow. good luck |

Howdy, I used the carb air flow restrictor discs on the er5 without any ill effects, picked the 1988 zx10 up back in may, the only option for restriction was £180 kit from a specialist that a buddy in the trade directed me to. I decided it was better to finish the 33bhp on the er as the zx would have been crippled. personally I would get a 5/600cc that's easy to restrict and save the zx9r until the 33bhp is spent, especially if the restriction caused the engine failure. it's a good time of year to pick a cheap 5/600 up, gumtree always has a few decent bikes.... my restriction only ended 2 weeks ago so I am no expert!
