Hi wondered if anyone can help. I have a zx636 a1p. Start it up on a weekly basis, started it up 2day left it running while I spoke to someone. When I came back coolant was pouring out the overflow at the back temperature was 99 degrees and it sounded like the fan had kicked in. Anyone got any ideas why it has done this and will it have done any damage. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi bud,

I'm no expert but here is what I think just to put it out there so to speak, and hopefully other will comment too.

On my thermostat housing (zzr600), the expansion pipe outlet to the expansion tank at the rear is on the radiator side of the thermostat. So that means if the thermostat was stuck there would be a lack of water on that side which would not put the water to your expansion tank.
But, I'm thinking if the system is filled up too much and the thermostat sticks then in my mind you would get the result that you have experienced.
So check when your engine is cold that your expansion tank is at the min mark to give room for the expanding coolant when the coolant is at ooperating temp.

Has the engine been damaged? Probably not. But the best you could have done was to switch the bike off and let it cool down naturally. The hot coolant should not have damaged seals in such a relatively short period of time but that is not a given. It's usually when they are constantly heated too high that they go brittle. As the water was being relieved from somewhere you may be lucky that no seals have been pressurised too much also. On this note can I ask you to check your oil level. If it is higher than you noted on your preride/daily checks then there is a possibility that water may be filling up your crank case. This is bad and I hope this is not the case, but alway a good check.

So, in short. Check for over filling of the coolant and have your thermostat checked/replaced.
Hope this at least helpss you in someway.

Good luck bud and hope the beast is fine.

Sid
