In case anyone is interested I have been compiling a diary of the rebuild of my GT550G9 over on Pistonheads. The link is:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=74&t=1322545&mid=391750&nmt=Kawasaki+GT550+rebuild

Advice and comment are welcome. The next major step is to fit the pistons and barrels. I am considering a rebore and new pistons even though it is not entirely necessary. Has anyone ever bought pistons from IMD Piston Co.? They advertise on eBay but I have no idea if the quality is acceptable.

I get worried about guys doing rebuilds at big costs.I recently sold a 1999 GT 550 mint condition
bike with 20k on the clock for £800 and made a profit.

I didn't realise my wife had signed up to the Kawasaki Owners Club! Seriously, the cost has not been high so far. Apart from the frame welding the cost of parts is less than £300. But that is not really the point. The rebuild is a hobby, and there are many other hobbies which would cost more. The weekly cost is less than a round of drinks and far less than the cost of a football match or even a Sky Sport subscription. To observe you could by a bike for less than the cost of parts misses the point of the exercise.
